During the American Civil War, Adele Hugo (Isabelle Adjani), the second daughter of the great French writer Victor Hugo, travels across the ocean to Halifax, Canada, in search of her lover—a British officer named Pinson (Bruce Robinson). However, Pinson has already fallen for someone else and is indifferent towards Adele. Adele tries every possible way to win back Pinson, but all her attempts fail. Meanwhile, the high cost of living makes it difficult for Adele to manage, forcing her to repeatedly ask her father for money. At this time, Hugo is exiled on a small island, and his wife is seriously ill; both have hoped for Adele to return home, but she insists on staying in Canada. The failure of her romance often reminds Adele of her sister who drowned, and her mental state starts to deteriorate. Later on, Pinson leaves Halifax with his troops for another small island, Barbados, and Adele follows him. There, her condition worsens, and she is eventually sent back to France, where she spends the rest of her life in a sanatorium, quietly passing away during World War I.
This film is a biographical piece about Victor Hugo's second daughter, Adele, with Isabelle Adjani nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress that year.
