Colin (Rupert Everett) and Mary (Natasha Richardson), whose emotional relationship has fallen into a deadlock, vacation in Venice, trying to change their lazy and dull lives. One night, they meet a local man, Mr. Robert (Christopher Walken), who reveals to the couple his childhood wounds and promotes extreme male chauvinism. Colin and Mary feel an indescribable threat, but their boredom with ordinary life and desire for excitement compel them to accept Robert's invitation to his home. Robert's wife, Caroline (Helen Mirren), confides in Mary about her complicated and abusive relationship with Robert, leading to some ambiguous changes in Mary's psyche, and, combined with this unsettling stimulus, strangely reignites the extinguished passion between her and Colin. Thus, after a subsequent encounter with Robert and Caroline, Colin and Mary uncontrollably follow them, even knowing they may become victims of this twisted romance... This film is adapted from the novel of the same name by British novelist Ian McEwan, directed by Paul Schrader, a leading figure of the "New Hollywood" known for being Martin Scorsese's screenwriter.
