Twelve shell-shaped unidentified flying objects suddenly appeared above the Earth, hovering over twelve different countries. The aliens sent signals to humanity, but humans were unable to decipher them. The U.S. military recruited linguist Louise (played by Amy Adams) and physicist Ian (played by Jeremy Renner) in hopes that the two could collaborate to crack the alien language. After several encounters, Louise discovers that the aliens use a highly unique circular form of writing and gradually begins to understand its intricacies. Unable to ascertain the true purpose of the aliens' arrival, four countries, including China and Russia, decide to launch an attack on the aliens. The U.S. also decides to abandon their research and evacuate all personnel. At this critical moment, Louise finally understands the aliens' intentions. Using the special "weapon" bestowed upon her by the aliens, Louise single-handedly changes the future.
