Hanneck (played by Burt Lancaster) is a somewhat renowned newspaper columnist, whose extensive experience gives him considerable contacts and resources. Susan (played by Susan Harrison) is Hanneck's sister, and one day she falls in love with a jazz musician named Steve (played by Martin Milner). Hanneck looks down on Steve, feeling that he is unworthy of Susan, and thus, the arrogant Hanneck decides to do whatever it takes to break them apart. Hanneck finds a Manhattan news agent named Sidney (played by Tony Curtis) and uses tactics to force Sidney to become his "accomplice." Under their schemes, cracks begin to appear in the relationship between Susan and Steve, leading to their eventual breakup. However, the narrow-minded Hanneck is not satisfied with just this; he escalates his efforts, aiming to completely ruin the young man.
