The story takes place in a remote mountain village in Shanxi during the 1930s of the Republic of China. The village head, eager to gain favor, marries off his daughter to the son of the county magistrate, and learns through her of a sure-fire scheme: building a "Li Yilian ancestral hall" in the village can secure large amounts of relief grain and silver dollars from the county.
