Haller (Max von Sydow) is a writer who, cynical and disillusioned, cannot stand many of the contemporary societal habits. Unable to integrate into society, he often locks himself at home, retreating into solitude and darkness, and his mind is on the brink of collapse. One day, by chance, Haller reads a book titled "Steppenwolf," and its content enlightens him; he feels the book was tailor-made for him. In a coincidence, Haller meets the barmaid Hermina, and through her introduction, he gets to know the musician Pablo and the girl Maria (Dominique Sanda). When Haller discovers that Hermina is involved with Pablo, jealousy takes hold of him, leading him to lose his sanity and kill Hermina.
