Adapted from Zhang Yu's "Appendicitis" and Chen Jun's "Boring Story." Zhao Youliang, the mayor of a certain city, holds significant power. However, his actions are constantly monitored by the kind intentions of his secretary and wife, making it difficult for him to act freely according to his will, which frustrates him. To implement the superior's directives for clean and honest governance, he begins to often act alone, strolling through streets and alleys like an ordinary citizen. He feels relaxed, clear-headed, and gains insights that he cannot grasp while sitting in his office. One day, Mayor Zhao manages to evade the "concern" of his secretary and wife. He immerses himself in the community to understand the people's sentiments, but after eating unsanitary food at a farmers' market, he suddenly experiences unbearable abdominal pain and is taken to the hospital. Diagnosed with appendicitis, he needs to be hospitalized for surgery. Unexpectedly, Mayor Zhao's illness provides a great opportunity for those involved in corrupt practices. First, the hospital becomes tense and busy. The secretary is eager for promotion and goes out of his way to please the mayor, convening an emergency meeting to elevate the surgery for the mayor to a height of "political significance"; the hospital director and attending physician each have their own motives and engage in a fierce struggle. During Mayor Zhao's hospitalization, visitors come and go daily, sometimes causing long queues. Thus, Zhao has to instruct his secretary and nurses to implement a "registration" system to record the names, addresses, and gift items of the visitors, directing that all gifts be disposed of on-site and money returned to the donors. Among those who express opposition to such corruption are two gift boxes containing heavy bricks. Additionally, the daily injections for the mayor become a mental burden for the nurses, as the quality of care directly relates to future promotions and housing distributions. Therefore, Lily, who scores the highest in the housing distribution queue, reluctantly takes on the task of giving the mayor his injections. Due to her nerves, she accidentally sticks the needle into the mayor's buttock without administering the medication, which is perceived as a success in painless injection. Faced with this network of social relationships based on personal favors and flattery, Mayor Zhao engages in a clever resistance struggle.
