This film tells the tragic love story of a couple, Veronica (played by Tatyana Samojlova) and Boris (played by Aleksey Batalov), who are deeply in love during a time of war. Their happiness is shattered with the outbreak of war as Boris enlists in the army, and Veronica loses her parents in a bombing raid. Devastated, she takes shelter in Boris's father's home. Boris's cousin takes advantage of the situation, leading to public shame for Veronica. Overcome by despair, she contemplates ending her life but continues to wait for Boris's return. When she learns of Boris's sacrifice, she is left in utter hopelessness. After the war ends, while everyone else celebrates victory, Veronica arrives in the square, holding flowers. At that moment, a flock of geese flies overhead, reminiscent of the beautiful times they once shared. This film sparked worldwide attention upon its release, winning the Palme d'Or and Best Cinematography at the 1958 Cannes Film Festival thanks to its stunning visual contrasts and excellent camera work.
