During the Liberation War in 1948, company commander Gu Zidi (Zhang Hanyu) leads 47 soldiers of the Ninth Company to cover the retreat of the main forces at the banks of the Wenhe River. Brigade commander Liu Zeshui (Hu Jun) orders that the assembly call is a command; when the call is heard, they must retreat. The brutal war begins amidst the roar of artillery. The soldiers of the Ninth Company suffer heavy casualties. Squad leader Jiao Dapeng (Liao Fan) says before his sacrifice that he heard the assembly call, but Gu Zidi does not hear it and decides to hold his position. The Ninth Company repels three enemy attacks, destroys two tanks, and kills countless enemies. All 47 soldiers, except for commander Gu Zidi, are killed in action. This war changes Gu Zidi's life. After the unit is renumbered, Gu Zidi cannot find his organization, and the martyrs of the Ninth Company are declared missing. Gu Zidi begins a difficult search for an explanation for his brothers from the Ninth Company and to uncover the truth behind the assembly call of that year.
