Yang Tianqing (played by Li Baotian) has an uncle, Yang Jinshan (played by Li Wei), who is a dye house owner with a physical defect. After tormenting and killing two wives, he spends a large sum of money to buy a young and beautiful woman, Ju Dou (played by Gong Li), whom he abuses in every way possible. Yearning for love, Tianqing, who is nearly forty and has yet to marry, develops feelings for Ju Dou, who cries out in pain due to his uncle's nightly tyranny. They become intimate and have a son. Jinshan is overjoyed, believing the boy to be his own, and names him Tianbai. However, Jinshan soon suffers a stroke, becoming paralyzed.
