Shangang Ye (played by Li Rentang) is the highest political leader of Duiduiping. He has been in power in the village for decades and enjoys great prestige. However, the suicide of the village woman Qiangying at his doorstep creates quite a stir in the village. Meanwhile, Su Qin, a cadre from the county prosecutor's office who received an anonymous letter, arrives in the village to investigate. Believing that "a person of integrity has nothing to fear from shadows," Shangang Ye is not afraid of the investigation team. Su Qin quickly uncovers the reason behind Qiangying's suicide, which stems from Shangang Ye's rough work style. To urge migrant workers to return to the village to cultivate responsibility fields, he privately opens others' letters. When villagers fail to deliver their grain on time, he sends militiamen to detain them. There are also instances where he slaps those opposed to the dispatch of laborers. Su Qin understands that while Shangang Ye's selflessness is commendable, he shows a disregard for the law, thinking that village regulations equate to national law. Aware of his illegal actions, before leaving, he methodically assigns work in the village, and as people bid him farewell, they kneel on the ground, calling out "Ye..."
