The film tells the story of a lively teacher, Uchida, who resolutely resigns from his university teaching position to devote himself to writing at home, leading to a series of interesting life events. Uchida is deeply beloved by his students, who hold a birthday party for him every year. At each birthday party, the students ask him, "Are you ready?" and Uchida's response is always, "Not yet." Uchida's open-mindedness about life and death profoundly influences his students, constantly reminding them to maintain a healthy and positive mindset. When the professor's cat goes missing, the students quickly visit him, search everywhere for the cat, distribute flyers at school and other places, and place ads in the newspapers, hoping to help their teacher find his cat and regain his smile. A strong sense of teacher-student affection runs throughout the film. At the end of the film, after the birthday party, Uchida falls asleep while outside his students drink and chat. In his dreams, approaching old age, he sees children playing hide and seek in a straw pile, with a group of kids continuously asking if they're hidden, and he repeatedly answers, "Not yet, not yet."
