In 1911, the German composer Aschenbach (Dirk Bogarde), grieving the loss of his daughter, arrives in Venice, hoping to alleviate his sorrow with the beauty of the city. However, every sight only evokes more painful memories, until he encounters the beautiful youth Tadzio (Bjorn Andresen) at his hotel, whose statue-like Greek features make him tremble and lose himself in passionate excitement. Subsequently, the city of Venice is shrouded in plague, but the authorities deliberately suppress the news. As Aschenbach gradually realizes this alarming crisis, he does not panic and seek to escape like others. Instead, he willingly chooses to succumb to the plague and die in Venice just to catch one more glimpse of Tadzio.
