The film is adapted from the lyrical novel of the same name by Kotsyubynsky. The director breaks the plot into 11 segments: "Ivan and Marychka," "Polonyna," "Loneliness," "Ivan and Palahegna," "Everyday Life," "Christmas," "Spring Tomorrow," "Thunderstorm," "Small Hotel," "Ivan's Death," and "Pious Rituals," telling the poignant love tragedies of the protagonist Ivan: first, the female lead Marychka tragically drowns while searching for Ivan, followed by the betrayal of another female lead, Palahegna. The story concludes with Ivan dying at the hands of a rival. This film is a typical poetic cinema that showcases the landscape of a nation's quest for survival through its unique style, exploring the activities and changes in national consciousness. It mesmerizingly blends delicate documentary scenes with baroque visual effects. Guided by the protagonist's emotions, the narrative employs a whirlpool-like approach, navigating between the fantastical and the real. The camera seemingly enchanted draws viewers into their mysterious dreams. After its release, the film was initially banned but was lifted under pressure.
