Duan Xiaolou (Zhang Fengyi) and Cheng Dieyi (Leslie Cheung) are a pair of childhood friends who grew up together as brothers in the performance arts. One plays the male role and the other plays the female role, and they have always worked together seamlessly. Their performance of "Farewell My Concubine" has earned them great acclaim throughout Beijing, leading them to pledge to perform "Farewell My Concubine" together for a lifetime. However, their understanding of the relationship between drama and life is fundamentally different; Duan Xiaolou knows well that theater is not life, while Cheng Dieyi cannot distinguish between the two. When Duan Xiaolou decides it is time to settle down and marries the famous courtesan Juxian (Gong Li), Cheng Dieyi views Juxian as a shameful third party, believing Duan Xiaolou to be a traitor. From this point on, the love-hate relationship among the three surrounding "Farewell My Concubine" escalates with the changing tides of the times, ultimately leading to a tragedy.
