In the 1950s, the social status of women in the United States appeared to have improved significantly. However, at prestigious women's colleges like Wellesley, teachers still focused on preparing students for good marriages, not encouraging them to actively pursue knowledge that interested them or to develop their mental resilience. When the beautiful and passionate Katherine (played by Julia Roberts) graduated from college and became an art history teacher at the school, she faced many challenges in her quest to spread the seeds of freedom. However, due to her wit, directness, enthusiasm, and erudition, Katherine quickly won the affection of her students. Some of her students, like Joan (played by Julia Stiles), who aspired to achieve career successes like the boys, and the vivacious Betty (played by Maggie Gyllenhaal), slowly began to show their true selves. Yet, the news of another student, Betty (played by Kirsten Dunst), getting married disrupted the atmosphere of freedom and romance.
