On a train to Moscow, military academy student Andrei Tolstoy (played by Oleg Menshikov) unexpectedly meets the charming American woman Jane (played by Julia Ormond), and the two develop feelings for each other. Jane falsely claims to be a widow visiting her mad mechanic father (played by Richard Harris) in Russia, but in reality, she is a socialite sent to gain the trust of General Radlov, the head of the military academy (played by Aleksey Petrenko), so that the mechanic's "Barber of Siberia" lumberjack can smoothly enter West Berlin. However, the general falls genuinely in love with Jane and wishes to propose to her, while Andrei's feelings for Jane intensify. Jane, on one hand, wants to accept Andrei's feelings, but on the other hand, wants to complete her mission, leading to an unmanageable situation. In a performance, Andrei, due to jealousy and misunderstandings, injures the academy's head and is exiled to Siberia. At the train station, although Jane arrives for the final farewell, Andrei never gets to see her one last time. Ten years later, Jane finally finds Andrei's address in Siberia, but ultimately cannot escape the change of fate... Years later, Jane returns to America and recounts this past to her son in a letter.
