On a train to Moscow, military academy student Andrei Tolstoy (played by Oleg Menshikov) unexpectedly meets the charming American woman Jane (played by Julia Ormond), and the two develop feelings for each other. Jane falsely claims to be a widow visiting her mad mechanic father (played by Richard Harris) in Russia, but in reality, she is a socialite sent to gain the trust of General Radlov, the head of the military academy (played by Aleksey Petrenko), so that the mechanic's "Barber of Siberia" lumberjack can smoothly enter West Berlin. However, the general falls genuinely in love with Jane and wishes to propose to her, while Andrei's feelings for Jane intensify.
