In 1909, a German explorer fell ill with a mysterious disease in the Amazon jungle and sought help from a shaman whose tribe had been nearly wiped out. They wove along the river, trying to find lost tribesmen and a mysterious plant that could cure him. In 1941, an American explorer also set foot in the rainforest, retracing the path with a local elder. The slumbering memories of the rainforest gradually awaken, and the madness and disasters of the past grow like tropical plants, twisting into more grotesque scars... The Embrace of the Serpent, based on the expedition diaries of figures in the Amazon basin, is a black-and-white visual poem by young Colombian director Ciro Guerra, which won the Directors' Fortnight prize at the Cannes Film Festival and represented Colombia in the Oscar race for Best Foreign Language Film.
