In the late 19th century, the notorious "Butch Cassidy" (played by Paul Newman) and his partner the Sundance Kid (played by Robert Redford) rob banks throughout a small town in the American West, battling ruthless opponents and outsmarting the police. One day, they rob a "Flying Eagle" stagecoach, which leads to a chase by the sheriff and local residents. Nevertheless, they continue their carefree lifestyle, enjoying good times with schoolteacher Etta (played by Katharine Ross). After another robbery of the "Flying Eagle" stagecoach, they are pursued relentlessly by a group of mounted police, leading to a desperate escape. After jumping off a cliff, they find Etta and discuss their plans to move to Bolivia for a fresh start. In a foreign land, they try to go straight but ultimately find that life is not suited for them, returning to their old ways. In frustration, Etta leaves them and returns to America. They inadvertently reveal their identities in a small town, becoming surrounded by pursuing police. With traps set before them and pursuers behind, can Butch and the Sundance Kid survive the onslaught and rise again from the ashes? The film won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Original Song, and Best Score at the 42nd Oscars.
