The story takes place in Rotterdam, Netherlands, in May 1940. A young Dutch man named Vincent (played by Jan Smit) and his brother work as waiters at a hotel, while Vincent is also an amateur boxer. One day in early May, the daughter of a wealthy German businessman, Eva (played by Roos van Erkel), comes to the hotel to prepare for her wedding to German industrialist Dirk (played by Pieter Van der Sman). While delivering bread, Vincent encounters Eva on the street. As they take photos by a bridge, they unexpectedly face Dutch soldiers fighting off invading Nazi soldiers. To escape the danger, they hurriedly take refuge in the elephant house of a nearby zoo. During their time in the elephant house, Vincent and Eva quickly fall in love, and their feelings for each other deepen. However, this forbidden love provokes great hostility from Dirk towards Vincent. On May 14, Eva and Dirk plan to have their wedding in the church, but German planes begin a fierce bombing, turning the church and hotel into ruins. Vincent does everything he can to save Eva, but Dirk, gun in hand, stands in front of them. A gunshot rings out, and Vincent is injured in the shoulder. In that moment, Eva bravely rushes forward to seize the weapon, and amid this critical moment, an unexpected explosion occurs.
