In January 1949, the People’s Liberation Army surrounded 500,000 Nationalist troops in the Pingjin area, with a full-scale attack imminent. Whether North Peking could be liberated peacefully depended on the battle in Tianjin. At this time, Tianjin was fortified with bunkers and defensive works, and soldiers were armed and ready, turning the city into a hell before the imminent war.
