In the late Tang Dynasty when the vassal kings were divided, the kings of Liu, Duan, and Li in the northwest Yellow River basin all sought to seize power, leading to continuous warfare. The Liu King (Ji Chunhua) captured the Duan King's palace, and when the Duan King (Jin Demao) escaped for his life, he was saved by the Yellow River hero Ma Yi (Yu Chenghui). Soon after, the village where Ma Yi lived was brutally destroyed by the Liu King's soldiers. The Li King (Zhao Zhigang) witnessed everything. Ma Yi met the wandering performer Che Tian (Chunyu Shanshan), who, seeing his exceptional martial arts, encouraged him to perform and collect a considerable sum of money. The Li King sent someone to persuade Ma Yi to join him, but when that failed, Ma Yi was poisoned and blinded by him. Mistaking Che Tian for the instigator, Ma Yi intended to kill him for revenge, but after resolving the misunderstanding, they became sworn brothers. Soon, the Duan King welcomed Ma Yi into his palace and, seeing that though Ma Yi was blind, his swordplay was still impeccable, treated him as a "benefactor" and used him to eliminate the Liu King. The Duan King sent assassins to intercept the Li King, but after failing, he sought to kill his daughter Zhenzhen (Wan Qiong); however, Zhenzhen was saved by Ma Yi, who happened to pass by. Upon hearing this, the Duan King devised another scheme at a time when Zhenzhen and Ma Yi had already developed feelings for each other.
