The story takes place during the American Civil War. Tuco (Eli Wallach) is a ruthless bandit who is wanted in town for a bounty. Blondie (Clint Eastwood) is a cowboy who takes it upon himself to bring justice, and he inadvertently captures Tuco, but finding the bounty insufficient, he abducts him. In the desert, Blondie punishes Tuco to let him fend for himself. However, the cunning Tuco manages to escape and gathers some accomplices to capture Blondie at an inn. Just as Tuco is torturing Blondie in retaliation, he captures a soldier named Carson. Before dying, Carson reveals the secret of a treasure, and both Tuco and Blondie acquire half of the information. Meanwhile, a crafty killer, Angel Eyes (Lee Van Cleef), discovers the treasure's secret through other means. Thus, on the treasure hunt, the three men use their full cunning and engage in a series of thrilling confrontations...
