Freddy (played by Terence Stamp) is a very reclusive young man whose only hobby is collecting and making butterfly specimens. He is deeply infatuated with the beautiful and gentle Miranda (played by Samantha Eggar), but he chooses to bury these feelings deep within his heart. One day, Freddy gets lucky and wins the lottery, receiving a large sum of money. With this money, he buys a villa in the suburbs and kidnaps Miranda, locking her in the basement. Naive Freddy believes that as long as he treats Miranda well and shows her his better side, she will eventually fall in love with him. However, what he doesn’t realize is that everything he does only deepens Miranda's fear and disgust towards him. Ultimately, Miranda can't endure Freddy's torment, and her young life fades away with time.
