In a seaside town, a girl named Juliette (played by Brigitte Bardot), adopted by an elderly couple, faces criticism from the residents due to her beauty and unorthodox behavior. However, Juliette seems unconcerned and continues to engage with the wealthy businessman, Caradine, who is old enough to be her father. Caradine admires Juliette but also imposes limits on himself. Juliette becomes close to Anthony, the eldest of the three Tardieu brothers, but she chooses to walk away when she discovers his true nature. The guardians no longer tolerate Juliette's reckless behavior and notify the orphanage to bring her back. To keep Juliette in the town, Anthony's brother, Michel (played by Jean-Louis Trintignant), proposes to her. This unlikely marriage brings the two a carefree, peaceful happiness. Soon, Anthony returns to the town to run the boatyard, and the atmosphere in the Tardieu household becomes delicate. After Juliette has an accident at sea, the two brothers and Caradine become embroiled in a controversy.
