Selma (Björk), a Czech immigrant working in a rural factory in the United States, is inherently kind-hearted but suffers from a congenital disease that causes her vision to deteriorate. To prevent her son, who has inherited the same illness, from sharing her fate, Selma works tirelessly every day. Her oblivious friend and colleague, Linda (Catherine Deneuve), often expresses her concern and offers kind advice, to which Selma always responds with a smile, for she still possesses a pure escape into the world of music, where its beauty and tranquility are enough to withstand the bittersweet and harsh realities of life. What comforts her is that before her eyesight completely fades, she has managed to raise most of the funds needed for her son's surgery; however, just at this moment, an unexpected event occurs, accelerating her fate towards a complex and tragic situation.
