The workshop manager of a Milanese car factory, Nino (played by Alberto Sordi), prepares to spend his half-month vacation back home in Sicily. Before he leaves, his boss asks him to bring a gift to Vincenzo, the Sicilian Mafia boss. After Nino and his wife Marta step onto the soil of their hometown, he is filled with excitement as he introduces his large family to her. Some of his old friends have died from gun violence, some are in prison, and a few have become mere shadows of themselves in the eyes of the villagers due to betrayal. The remaining acquaintances are somewhat wary of Nino's "Milanese flavor." Nino visits Vincenzo and earns the approval of this Mafia elder, who once considered Nino a capable subordinate during the chaos of war. Marta gains acceptance from her family through her efforts, and Nino reconnects with his hometown's traditions. One night, Nino is awakened by his father and given the task of carrying out a Mafia assassination mission... This film won the Golden Shell Award at the 1963 San Sebastián International Film Festival.
