In the 1960s, after experiencing the Great Depression and rapid economic development post-war, Japan was filled with a restless and fervent atmosphere. One summer, an aloof high school student, Nishi-See Kaoru, transferred from Yokosuka to an ordinary town in Nagasaki Prefecture, seemingly out of touch with the times. He was handsome, came from a well-off family, excelled in his studies, and played the piano beautifully, but since childhood, he struggled to maintain eye contact with others, often leading to psychosomatic nausea. At his new school, he befriended the cheerful class president, Yō Ritsuko, and her childhood friend, the delinquent Kawabuchi Chintaro.
