The story takes place in the Greater Khingan Range forest area. Lin Nan (played by Li Xiuming), a student from the Drama Academy, visits the forest area and is received by the lumberjack Lao Ni (played by Li Wei). Lao Ni is the only survivor among those who ventured to northeastern China years ago. Before the liberation, due to persistent droughts in his hometown, he left to seek a livelihood beyond the border. During the spring downtime, he and his companions would go down the mountain to gamble and visit brothels, indulging in emotions and money. The prostitute Xiao Bai Xie (played by Ding Jiali) is gentle and kind but suffers from severe illness, and she takes a liking to the young Lao Ni, who promises to buy her freedom the following year.
