Not long ago, Annie (Katharine Hepburn) had just walked down the aisle with her husband Mike (Robert Mitchum). The happiness of their newlywed life barely lasted long before Mike's strange behaviors began to make Annie suspect that he might be suffering from a mental illness; she even feared for her own life due to potential threats from Mike. Alan (Robert Taylor), Mike's brother, came to Annie's house, and the presence of a third person alleviated the tense atmosphere. However, Annie soon discovered that there seemed to be serious irreconcilable conflicts between Alan and Mike. When Alan died, numerous clues pointed to Mike as the murderer, yet Mike's display of innocence made Annie begin to doubt the truth of the events.
