Japanese detective Yamamoto (Hiroyuki Sanada) meets Hong Kong policewoman Michelle (Michelle Yeoh) while escorting prisoner Li Zhongqing back to Hong Kong. Li's accomplices attempt to rescue him, resulting in both being killed by Yamamoto. There are four criminals in total, and the remaining two seek revenge, killing Yamamoto's wife and daughter.
