The failed scholar Wang Sheng (played by Cheng Shao Qiu) has been married for many years but has no children. One day, while rushing home from the city, he encounters a stunning young woman, You Feng (played by Wang Zu Xian). Feng claims to have a pitiful background, being forced to marry as a concubine to a wealthy family, suffering under the main wife's cruelty, and thus daring to escape. Wang, acting nobly, offers Feng a place to stay temporarily in his study. That night, Wang wishes to have an intimate relationship with Feng, but as dawn breaks, Feng excuses herself due to not feeling well and refuses Wang's advances. The next day, Wang goes to the city to buy cosmetics for Feng in hopes of winning her favor, where he meets Daoist Yu Qing (played by Liu Xun), who tells him he is plagued by evil energy, but Wang ignores this warning. Upon returning home, Wang expresses his intention to take Feng as a concubine to his wife, Chen. While Feng is bathing and disrobing, Chen peeks through the window and horrifies herself by witnessing Feng removing her face skin and applying makeup, fainting in shock. Wang rushes to the Yu Qing Daoist Temple, seeking the Daoist to exorcise the demons. Yu Qing gives Wang a small dust broom, advising him to hang it outside his bedroom door and to plan further, but unexpectedly, Feng sneaks into the room to recount her tragic past......
