The story takes place in London in 1862, where James (Eddie Redmayne) is a young scientist with lofty ambitions dedicated to researching weather forecasting technology. However, financial difficulties prevent him from using his hot air balloon to take his findings to the skies, leading him to seek the help of a woman named Amelia (Felicity Jones). Amelia is a highly experienced hot air balloon pilot who is currently trapped in a painful past. She agrees to James's request, and together they embark on an adventure in the hot air balloon, reaching heights never before ventured by humanity through their intelligence and courage. However, as they ascend higher, the dangers they face become greater.
