This is a masterpiece by Jiří Menzel from 1985, which not only earned him another Oscar recognition nearly twenty years later but also brought attention back to Czech cinema, which had been absent from the international film scene for a long time. The protagonist is a mentally challenged orphan who usually works as an assistant to a farm driver. Although they cause quite a few mishaps, they are like father and son until a major mistake turns the driver into the laughing stock of the village, prompting him to unexpectedly sever their working relationship. The kind-hearted, simple fool decides to leave his home and seek a new job at a mining company in Prague. Can he adapt to the vastly different urban life? Can he let go of this quirky yet lovable little village? Menzel's vibrant and diverse portrayal of the small town is delicate and moving. IMDB rating: 8.0
