The legendary hero Li Mu Bai (played by Chow Yun-fat) intends to withdraw from the martial world and entrusts his close confidante Yu Shu Lian (played by Michelle Yeoh) to pass on the Green Destiny sword to Prince Jai (played by Lang Xiong) for safekeeping. However, that same night, it is stolen by Jen Yu (played by Zhang Ziyi). Yu Shu Lian secretly investigates and suspects that it was the work of the young lady of the Yu household, Yu Jiaolong. She attempts to force Yu Jiaolong to return the sword to avoid further conflict. Meanwhile, Li Mu Bai discovers the whereabouts of the Blue-eyed Fox (played by Cheng Pei-pei), who was responsible for his master's death. She is hiding in the Yu household and has taken Yu Jiaolong as her apprentice. Yu Jiaolong intends to use the Green Destiny sword to break the chains that bind Luo Xiaohu (played by Zhang Zhen) and they decide to commit to each other. Their relationships become increasingly complicated as Yu Shu Lian and Li Mu Bai value Yu Jiaolong's rare talent and try to guide her, but Yu Jiaolong stubbornly disregards their advice...
