During World War II in southern France, the tough American Army lieutenant, 3rd Lieutenant Scott (played by Frank Sinatra), and the arrogant radio operator, Britt Harris (played by Tony Curtis), both fall for a French girl, Monique Blair (played by Natalie Wood). When they learn that Blair's father is black and that she is biracial, a conflict arises between them due to racial attitudes. Lieutenant Scott overcomes his potential prejudices, but Harris does not. In battle, Scott loses an arm, and after the war, he comes to be with Blair
