In response to the increasingly rampant terrorism after 9/11, U.S. President Henry Ashton (played by William Hurt) convenes with leaders from Western countries and Arab nations in Salamanca, Spain, to establish a new anti-terror alliance. The day is sunny, and the square is crowded with people from various social backgrounds, creating a cacophony of noise. President Ashton’s motorcade arrives amidst cheers and protests, with senior agent Thomas Barnes (played by Dennis Quaid), who was shot six months earlier while protecting the president, at the forefront, vigilantly monitoring suspicious individuals around him. Just as the president is about to deliver his speech, two bullets strike him. Chaos erupts in the square as people flee in panic, rush to the podium, or take advantage of the disorder to cause mayhem. An explosion soon follows, completely destroying this beautiful day.
