In the dark, he (Ryan Gosling) assists gangsters in robberies as a getaway driver. By day, he works at his friend Shannon's (Bryan Cranston) car shop doing stunt work for movies. During a trip to the supermarket, he encounters Irene (Carey Mulligan) and her son, and they share a mutual attraction, spending a pleasant weekend together. However, Irene’s husband Standard gets out of prison, which abruptly ends their romance; despite their feelings for each other, they are left with no choice. Shannon recommends him to gang leaders Bernie and Nino. Meanwhile, he inadvertently discovers Standard being beaten up, as he owes protection fees from his time in prison. To pay back the loan and ensure the safety of Irene and her son, Standard decides to take risks again. He resolves to help Standard complete a heist for Irene. However, during the bank robbery, Standard is accidentally shot dead by the owner, and he and his female accomplice Blanche find themselves trapped in a dark game of backstabbing... The Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn won the Best Director Award at the 64th Cannes Film Festival for this film.
