During the Korean War, Commander Li (played by Li Yan) of a volunteer army unit received orders from higher authorities and led his troops to the enemy's front lines, waiting for an opportunity to attack the enemy in the front with neighboring units. Upon arriving at the designated location, reconnaissance revealed that the enemy's front was surrounded by minefields on three sides, with only an open area directly ahead. Commander Li ordered his deputy, Cui Kai (played by Yu Chunmian), to take a unit for ambush. Before setting out, a national慰问团 visited to see the frontline commanders and soldiers, and Commander Li unexpectedly discovered that the head of the慰问团, Mei (played by Hu Zihui), was the widow of an old comrade. Her son, Ding Dayong (played by Zhang Liang), was among the ambush unit set to depart. Commander Li wanted Ding Dayong to stay with his mother, but she insisted that her son go to the front lines and urged him to strike hard against the enemy. While in ambush, an incendiary bomb struck the dry grass near Ding Dayong, and he endured severe burns, persisting until the unit launched the general attack... This film is adapted from Song Zhi's play "Defending Peace."
