Fang Baoqing (played by Li Xuejian) is an artist who sings drum stories, supporting a family of five on his own while leading a very hard life. Baoqing's adopted daughter Xiulian learns the drum stories under Baoqing's guidance, and they share a deep bond. When the Japanese army attacks, Baoqing flees with his family to Chongqing, where he unexpectedly reunites with an old friend, Master Tang. They hit it off and decide to open a theater named "Shengping," which thrives. Baoqing, riding high on spring winds, wishes to establish a school to teach drum stories, but just at that critical moment, Japanese bombers shatter his dreams. By chance, Baoqing meets writer Meng Liang, who comes to his home to teach Xiulian to read. On Meng Liang's suggestion, Baoqing sends Xiulian to school, but she endures bullying due to her poor background. Baoqing's brother dies, Xiulian is victimized, and his eldest daughter Dafeng is abandoned by her in-laws, causing the usually strong Baoqing to collapse.
