In the autumn of 1949, the People's Liberation Army arrived at Hani Mountain. On the first day of the troops entering the mountains, they encountered the Black-faced People who were robbing the local landlord's horse caravan. The landlord reported to the PLA that the remnants of Ma Peng had already fled across the border, and that there was only a group of "murderers and arsonists, guilty of all evils" known as the "Black-faced Bandits." The local people, however, reflected that the "Black-faced Bandits" only targeted the landlord and Ma Peng and never harmed the suffering people. A reconnaissance unit of the PLA decided to rely on the local community to quickly gather information about the Ma Peng bandits and the "Black-faced Bandits." Hani warrior Galo went into the village to inquire about the whereabouts of his beloved girl, Zongni. Aunt Yige, Zongni's mother, told him that Zongni had been taken by Ma Peng and sold abroad. Galo was heartbroken. The PLA was carrying out community work when they were suddenly ambushed. Shamu, who had been forced to join Ma Peng's band, secretly returned to his village at night to visit his wife but smeared his face black. Platoon leader Dahan and Galo analyzed and concluded: the Ma Peng bandits had not fled abroad; their disguised ambush was meant to lure the PLA into attacking the black pine forest. In a cave deep in the black pine forest, the Black-faced People were looking at a PLA notice. "Big Brother" Zongni recalled her painful past—three years ago, Ma Peng's band had attempted to sell her and her twelve sisters to foreign bosses. In order to resist the bandits' humiliation, Zongni had seized a gun and killed the bandit leader. With the help of an old hunter, she and her companions escaped. From then on, the girls couldn't return home, painted their faces black, and hid in the dense forest. Zongni, filled with grief and anger, tore the notice to pieces. She walked out of the cave and recognized Galo, who was scouting in the forest, feeling very excited. One night, Zongni secretly returned home but was caught by Galo. However, Zongni mistakenly thought that her younger sister had been injured by Galo, so she slapped him hard and disappeared into the rainy night. Ma Peng received information about the landlord's intention to flee abroad and deliberately leaked this news to Aunt Yige, attempting to draw the Black-faced People out of the black pine forest. Shamu, who had positive feelings towards the PLA, learned of this and quietly reported it to them. Galo went into the cave to win over the Black-faced People. The Black-faced People were unwilling to be seen as bandits, each removing their headscarves to reveal the faces of girls. Galo regretted wrongly suspecting the girls, when Aunt Yige brought news that the landlord was trying to escape abroad. Galo could not stop them, and Zongni led the girls out of the black pine forest. The PLA intercepted the landlord as planned. The Ma Peng remnants launched a fierce attack on the Black-faced People, and Ma Peng's bullets hit Galo, while Zongni's bamboo arrow killed Ma Peng. The Ma Peng band was completely wiped out.
