In early spring of 1958, the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region experienced the climax of the Great Leap Forward. Patamuhan, the deputy director of the Oasis Agricultural Production Cooperative, returned from studying in the interior. She actively responded to the higher authorities' call for grain self-sufficiency, advocating for reclaiming land in Shayuanzi for grain planting. However, the cooperative director, Hasmu, believed that the Oasis Cooperative had always focused on cash crops and mainly relied on purchasing government-subsidized grain, insisting that this principle should continue. Under the encouragement of the speculative merchant Mushaya, he was determined to focus on side businesses for profit. Patamuhan did not oppose the development of side businesses, but she believed that increasing grain production was fundamental. Ignoring Hasmu's objections, she organized the members to reclaim land with the support of the poor and lower-middle peasants, with enthusiastic help from Halyk, the director of the Shayuanzi Agricultural Cooperative, to plant wheat. Unexpectedly, just as the wheat seedlings were thriving, a gale of level eight swept through, burying the wheat fields in flying sand and damaging many fruit trees. Patamuhan immediately organized the masses for rescue while Hasmu believed the wheat was beyond saving and suggested giving up. As everyone was busy responding to the disaster, Mushaya and the landlord Turanburke gloatingly incited Hasmu to take some side business workers out for short labor and to sell the cooperative’s cotton and vegetable seeds at high prices in the free market. Patamuhan quickly discovered the problem and advised Hasmu not to listen to Mushaya. However, Hasmu misunderstood Patamuhan as trying to elevate herself and deliberately made things difficult for her. Later, with Halyk's help, Patamuhan saved the wheat seedlings and reaped a bountiful harvest. Afterwards, Halyk's grandfather, Sayiti, sought Patamuhan's father, Reyim, to discuss a marriage proposal, but Mushaya spread rumors to sabotage it. Hasmu rushed to the joint reclamation site without knowing the details, arguing loudly with Patamuhan and Halyk, accusing them of mixing public and private matters regarding the merger of the cooperatives. Township chief Hashan and Secretary Zhang realized that this was not just a matter of Hasmu's ideology and that there were definitely bad people instigating behind the scenes; he instructed Patamuhan to investigate. Relying on the strength of the masses, Patamuhan quickly gathered evidence of Mushaya and Turanburke's rumors, sabotage, and theft of collective property. Faced with the facts, Mushaya and Turanburke had to lower their heads and confess. With the help of the Party organization, Hasmu awakened from his delusions and regretted being deceived and used by the enemy. In the end, the Oasis, Shayuanzi, and other agricultural cooperatives merged to establish a people's commune, and the qanats and channels were completed, with clear spring water flowing to the newly reclaimed fields, turning ancient yellow sand into an oasis.
