A poor girl named Cui Qiao (played by Xue Bai) from the Loess Plateau in Northern Shaanxi has been betrothed since childhood by her father (played by Tan Tuo). Gu Qing (played by Wang Xueqi), a member of the Eighth Route Army's art troupe, comes to Cui Qiao's home to collect folk songs, and after a while, the two families seem to bond as if they were their own. Gu Qing talks about women's autonomy in marriage in Yan'an, which inspires Cui Qiao. Although her father is kind, he is also ignorant, insisting that Cui Qiao marry in April. Just as Gu Qing is about to leave, Cui Qiao expresses her desire to go to Yan'an with him, but Gu Qing feels powerless to help.
