The story takes place in 1946, after the war has ended. Ivan (John Savage) is released from a German POW camp and returns to his hometown, where everything has changed. Ivan has always been thinking about his first love, Maria (Nastassja Kinski), but now Maria has a boyfriend, El (Vincent Spano). Ivan doesn’t blame Maria; he just feels sad. One night, Ivan asks Maria out, and they finally resolve their emotional turmoil and confess their feelings to each other. After that, Maria breaks up with El and walks down the aisle with Ivan. The trauma from the war prevents Ivan from having sex with Maria, which frustrates the newlywed couple. Strangely, Ivan is able to when he ends up in bed with Mrs. Vaynich (Anita Morris).
