In the fishing port of Daisen on the Shimonoseki Peninsula, the fisherman Kobina Bojuro (played by Ken Ogata) raises his daughter alone. His daughter, Eriko (played by Masako Natsume), falls in love with a young man, Shunichi (played by Koichi Sato), who works in a coffee shop. To win Bojuro's favor, Shunichi decides to learn fishing from him. After several days of waiting, they finally encounter a school of tuna. While Bojuro focuses on catching fish, Shunichi accidentally gets tangled in the fishing line and nearly loses his life. After being discharged from the hospital, the couple moves back to the city, leaving Bojuro alone.
A year later, Shunichi and Eriko return to the fishing village. One night, Shunichi goes out to sea and does not return, and the radio communication is cut off. Bojuro sets out to search for him and finds Shunichi exhausted, fighting with a large fish and on the verge of death…
