One day, cavalryman Jim (Richard Widmark) seeks out his old friend, town sheriff McKay (James Stewart), asking for his help to rescue people who were once kidnapped by Indians. Ultimately, the two succeed in saving a boy named Quicksilver (David Kent) and a woman named Elena (Shirley Jones). However, this action brings the wrath and pursuit of Stone Bull (Woody Strode), who is eventually shot dead by McKay. Back at the outpost, Quicksilver and Elena are not welcomed by the locals and face rejection everywhere, with only kind Mrs. McCaffrey (Jeanette Nolan) willing to take Quicksilver in. Over time, McKay gradually falls in love with the strong-willed Elena.
