In 1970, legendary director Orson Welles (Citizen Kane) began working on a new film, featuring an impressive cast that included John Huston, Peter Bogdanovich, Susan Strasberg, and Welles' late-life collaborator Oja Kodar. This film ultimately became his swan song. However, troubled by funding issues, the production was halted in 1976 and soon became notorious in the industry, remaining unfinished and unreleased. After Welles passed away, over a thousand reels lay dormant in Paris for 30 years until March 2017, when producers Frank Marshall (who served as the production manager during the early filming of The Wind) and Philippe Lesage spearheaded the completion of Welles' vision. The Other Side of the Wind features a new score by Oscar-winning composer Michel Legrand (The Umbrellas of Cherbourg) and has been edited by a technical team including Oscar-winning editor Bob Murawski (The Hurt Locker). It tells the story of renowned filmmaker J.J. "Jake" Hannaford (played by Huston), who returns to Hollywood after wandering Europe for several years, preparing to launch an innovative film and announce his comeback. Welles' final work satirizes the classical studio system of his time and the new institutions striving to break the old paradigms of the film industry, serving as both a captivating snapshot of a long-gone era of filmmaking and a highly anticipated "new" work from a master director.
