In a mountainous area in northern China, the Qingsongling production team. One morning, a young girl, Xiumei (played by Liu Xiaomei), and a young man, Dahu (played by Wang Youlai), secretly drive the production team's large cart to practice. Unexpectedly, the horse gets startled, but thanks to the caretaker, Zhang Wanshan (played by Li Rentang), who prevents the frightened horse, no accident occurs. The car handler, Qian Guang (played by Li Shunan), incites Xiumei's brother, the team leader Zhou Cheng (played by Zhang Baoru), to stop the young people from learning how to drive the cart, ultimately bolstering Qian Guang's power. After the new party branch secretary, Fang Jiyun (played by Zhu Longguang), arrives at Qingsongling, he realizes that Zhou Cheng focuses solely on production and lacks political awareness. He decides to take the reins from Qian Guang and put it in the hands of his own people. Soon, a cart-driving training class is established in the village, with Uncle Wanshan teaching the youth how to drive the cart step by step. Qian Guang harbors resentment about this, and when the lead horse is drenched in sweat, he intentionally makes it drink water, causing the horse to fall ill, and he shifts the blame to Xiumei. Caring for the horse as if it were his own child, Uncle Wanshan meticulously nurtures the sick horse, ultimately restoring its health. The cart is once again running on the road of socialism.
