In the 1950s, in a certain city. A Fu (Li Shoucheng) is the son of Zhang Qixin (Qi Heng), the supply section chief at a factory. One day, he brings home a Soviet-made oil drill sample, which A Fu accidentally sells to an old man (Li Baoluo) who buys scrap metal. With the money he makes, A Fu buys a parachute from his classmate Yongxiang (Tian Feng). When Zhang Qixin discovers the drill sample is missing and inquires about it, he learns that his son sold it as scrap, which makes him very anxious. Knowing he's caused a big problem, A Fu rushes to take his father and sister to find the old man who buys scrap.
