Adapted from Kafka's unfinished novel "America," but its focus is not on a real America; rather, it resembles a fable about America without a specific timeframe. Karl Rossmann, due to a scandal, accepts his uncle's invitation to move to America; however, he cannot escape the old-world habits of the European continent, and worse still, the class structure in Europe prevents him from making a living with his own hands. This film version highlights the brutal and unpredictable class relations created by capitalist society while remaining faithful to the original work without adding a conclusion to the film. The couple Straub's consistent style perfectly combines with the Kafkaesque atmosphere: fixed mid-shots, expressionless actors, deliberately stiff body language and dialogue, emphasizing profile close-ups, and intentionally abrupt camera movements and pans. Thus, we can explore the experimental possibilities of adapting Kafka's works.
